- A dead parent (died several years before the book begins; death not shown on-page or described in detail)
- A serious leg injury with long-term consequences for a secondary character (occurred before the book begins, but briefly mentioned through protagonist’s memory in Chapters 7 and 34)
- Emotional abuse of protagonist by a parent (takes place prior to to the book beginning, but shown through memories/dream sequence in Chapters 13 and 21)
- Domestic violence, specifically emotional and physical abuse of one spouse by the other (occurs prior to the book beginning, but shown through dreams/memory in Chapter 13, as well as in rite sequence in Chapter 40)
